Information sharing for child safety and wellbeing

New legislation makes it easy to share information to ensure the safety and wellbeing of a child or young person in the Northern Territory.

The NT Legislative Assembly has passed amendments to the Care and Protection of Children Act to assist people and organisations with responsibility for children to share information.

Under the new "information sharing framework" people such as teachers, registered foster carers, doctors and child care workers will be able to share information relating to the safety and wellbeing of a child without fear of criminal or civil liability.

The new legislation makes it clear how people and organisations can request and receive information from others who are helping a child and the child's family. The name in the legislation for those who are authorised to share information relating to child safety or wellbeing is "authorised information sharer".

Information sharing begins on 1 July 2012. Find out on this website how to Share It!
