The Office of Women's Policy is responsible for providing gender specialist policy advice to the Minister for Women's Policy, the Northern Territory Government and public sector agencies. It has a central coordination, monitoring and reporting function regarding women's issues in the Northern Territory.
Roles and responsibilities
- To advance the social, political and economic status of women in the Northern Territory
- Provide policy advice and options to government on women's issues
- Implement, monitor, evaluate and report on government policies that impact on Territory women
- Identify gaps and emerging trends for future government action
- Coordinate and report on policy implementation across all agencies
- Work across government and the community sector on women's issues
- Provide specialist gender advice
- Community engagement activities
- Promote and celebrate the diversity and achievements of Territory women
Policy development, information and advice
The Implementation of the Northern Territory Government women's policy: Building on our Strengths - A Framework for Action for Women in the Northern Territory 2008-2012.
The Framework has a focus on a gender analysis approach to policy across five key areas: Health and Wellbeing, Safety, Economic Security, Participation and Leadership, and Life Balance.
International
The Office of Women's Policy prepares jurisdictional reports on the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)., as well as other international conventions that intersect with women's rights for example human rights conventions, violence conventions or conventions relating to political rights.
National
The Office of Women's Policy supports the Minister for Women's Policy and represents the Northern Territory at national meetings to progress the national agenda for women such as the Council of Australian Government's (COAG) Select Council on Women's Issues.
The Office also participates and provides input from a Northern Territory perspective on National Working Groups to progress gender equality, preventing violence against women and women's leadership at a national level.
The Office also works with whole of government to coordinate, monitor, evaluate and report on NT policies, programs and services to inform the national agenda.
